Questions about Labiaplasty
Chicago Plastic Surgeon
What is labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is technically the surgical reshaping of either the labia minora (inner lips) or labia majora (outer lips) of a woman's genitals. However, the term has been used to describe many different related procedures that address the appearance or function of a woman's genital area, including the pubis mons, the G-Spot, the hymen, the perineum, and the vagina. The procedures performed by plastic surgeon Dr. Otto J. Placik include:
- Labia minora reduction
- Labia majora reshaping
- Mons pubis liposuction and/or lift
- Clitoral hood reduction
- G-shot
- Hymenoplasty
- Perineoplasty
- Vaginoplasty
Basic details about the first five procedures can be found on our labiaplasty page. More information can be found about other procedures by contacting Dr. Placik.
Does labiaplasty hurt?
Many women are concerned about the discomfort of a labiaplasty procedure, but all of the procedures are performed with adequate anesthesia, either straight local (20% so that patients may drive themselves from and to the procedure) or combined with oral sedation (75%) or general anesthesia (5% at paitent’s request or if combined with other procedures) depending on the patient's preference, and most patients experience no discomfort during the procedure. For patients concerned about discomfort during the recovery period, a pump that delivers medication in regular, controlled doses can be used, but most women find that discomfort can be controlled with oral medication.
What results can I expect from labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty can typically improve the appearance and function of the labia minora and/or labia majora. Women who experienced physical discomfort during activities like exercise or sexual intercourse will find this discomfort significantly reduced. Women who were unable to wear some types of clothing because of self-consciousness will find they are free to choose clothing without worry. During your consultation, Dr. Placik will talk to you about your goals for your labiaplasty procedure, and discuss whether these are realistic goals.
What is the best labiaplasty method?
There are two main labiaplasty methods currently used for labia minora reduction: the wedge and trim methods. In the wedge method, tissue is removed from the middle third of the labia with a wedge-shaped incision. In the trim method, the leading edge of one or both labia is removed along the full length of the labia. Which method is best for you depends on your personal goals. For women who desire to remove the rough, darkened edges of their labia or who desire clitoral hood reduction during the same procedure, the trim method is preferred. For other women, especially those who need tissue removed from the middle third of the labia, the wedge method may be better.
How soon after labiaplasty can I resume having sex?
It is recommended that you wait about the same amount of time after labiaplasty as you should wait after having a baby—six to eight weeks. However, this is a general guideline and you should make your decision based on your personal level of discomfort and your assurance.
Can labiaplasty improve my sex life?
Labiaplasty can address certain concrete factors that may be detrimental to your sex life, such as discomfort during intercourse or trepidation that comes from self-consciousness about the appearance of your labia. For some women, labiaplasty leads to an improved sex life. For other women, labiaplasty removes one obstacle, but reveals other factors that contribute to an unsatisfying sex life. Because every woman's anatomy is different, even a procedure specifically targeted at improving sexual gratification, such as the G-shot, cannot guarantee an improved sex life.
What risks are associated with labiaplasty?
The risks associated with labiaplasty are similar to those of any major plastic surgery, including:
- Abnormal bleeding
- Infection
- Scarring
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia
- Changes in skin sensation
- Unsatisfying cosmetic result
These risks are infrequent. Dr. Placik will discuss each of these possible risks and their likelihood during your consultation.
