Labiaplasty

Chicago Plastic Surgeon

"Labiaplasty" is a blanket term commonly used to refer to many types of female genital surgery. These procedures can help women who feel uncomfortable with the form or function of their genitalia. This discomfort can range from self-consciousness to significant physical pain. It can prevent women from enjoying many of the activities that make up a full and satisfying life. Sometimes, women experience discomfort from childhood, while others come to an awareness during puberty or later.

For many women, the best way to learn more about these issues is to discuss them in a confidential consultation. Plastic surgeon Dr. Otto J. Placik and his staff have talked with many women about these sensitive matters and can put you at ease, listen to your concerns, and help you find the best possible solution in your situation. Please schedule a consultation to learn more.

Types of Labiaplasty Procedures

A variety of techniques are often referred to as "labiaplasty." However, the procedures address different conditions and several specific parts of the anatomy. Some of the procedures commonly referred to as "labiaplasty" include:

  • Labia Minora Reduction
  • Labia Majora Remodeling
  • Clitoral Hood Reduction
  • Mons Pubis Liposuction and/or Lift
  • G-Spot Amplification

These procedures are described in brief detail below.

Labia Minora Reduction

Labia minora reduction helps women who experience discomfort as a result of labia minora (inner lips) that they feel are too large. They can experience physical discomfort during exercise, sexual activities, even wearing tight clothing. Women may also feel self-conscious about wearing tight clothing, including bathing suits and gym wear, or undressing in front of potential intimate partners. Large labia may become irritated, painful, and ulcerated, and may prevent difficulties for hygiene, leading to increased incidence of urinary infections. Enlarged labia may be congenital (present at birth), developmental, or the result of pregnancy and childbirth.

This can effect one or both sides. Typically this is performed in combination with clitoral hood reduction.

Labia minora reduction is typically performed under local anesthesia accompanied by oral sedation. It can be performed in our fully accredited surgical center. Patients can typically resume light work duty in 5-7 days, but sexual intercourse is restricted for about 6-8 weeks.

Labia Majora Remodeling

The labia majora, or outer hair bearing lips can be bulky or have loose hanging skin that creates a visible bulge in snug clothing such as active wear or bathing suits. Sometimes the loose skin can make a woman feel reluctant to undress in front of a potential intimate partner. This can be treated with liposuction in the case of labia majora with an abundance of fat, or with the removal of skin from the inner, hidden surfaces of the labia majora. Sometimes, the appearance of labia majora can be restored by augmentation with grafted fat.

The recovery time for labia majora remodeling is slightly less than that for labia minora reduction in most cases. For labia majora augmentation, sexual activity is restricted for only about 2-3 weeks.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

It is not unusual for women with redundant labia minora to also report excessive skin of the clitoral hood. This can produce an undesirable appearance but occasionally it may interfere with stimulation of the clitoris during normal sexual activity. In many instances a clitoral hood reduction which consists or partial removal of the hood (and is to be distinguished from a complete resection also known as an unhooding or “hoodectomy”) may frequently accompany a labia minora reduction. Although this may add additional time to the procedure it does not effect the recovery process.

Mons Pubis Liposuction and/or Lift

Occasionally an excessively and disproportionately mons may occur as a congenital condition. Alternatively, If a woman gains a great deal of weight as a result of pregnancy or other causes, she may either have a prominent mons pubis or loose, sagging skin in the mons pubis. Women sometimes report that the resulting bulge makes them look like a man when wearing pants. Liposuction and/or the removal of an elliptical (football) shaped piece of skin above the pubic hairline can be used to treat this condition. It can be combined with a tummy tuck procedure.

A mons pubis lift is performed under local or general anesthesia in our fully accredited surgical center. A drain may be required. Patients typically resume light duty work after 7-10 days and can resume sexual activity after about 4-6 weeks.

G-Spot Amplification

The Gräfenburg spot, or G-spot, is claimed to be an erogenous zone that remains somewhat controversial regarding the belief that most or all women possess it and that seems to be related to a woman's ability to experience vaginal orgasms. Women with more volume in their G-spot are more likely to experience vaginal orgasms. G-spot augmentation involves the injection of a filler material (generally either collagen or Restylane) to result in enhanced sexual arousal and a greater likelihood for vaginal orgasms.

The procedure takes less than half an hour, requires no time off from work, and uses only a local anesthesia. Sexual activity is restricted for four hours after the procedure.
